Summary:

Justice that restores requires the intervention of all three members of our triune God. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice is under continuing financial pressure and has met this challenge by reducing the number and activity of chaplains in the system. TDCJ has provisions to allow volunteers to assist chaplains with their duties.

There are a number of semi retired persons who are willing to dedicate the time to assist unit chaplains with routine duties. These duties include facilitation of Voyager classes, facilitation of bible study classes, conducting worship services, counseling, and data entry.

Trinity RJM will assist interested persons to become qualified to perform these duties by providing training, mentoring, and professional support.

The Vision:

Crime destroys relationships. It destroys the relationship of the perpetrator with society, the perpetrator with their family, and the perpetrator with the victim. Crime affects all relationships of the perpetrator, the victim, and law enforcement professionals.

Only Jesus can restore relationships. Only God is qualified to adjudicate justice. The things we do in obedience to the Holy Spirit are ministries. Restorative Justice Ministries is what we do in obedience to the Spirit to restore relationships and promote justice.

The Need:

There are over 250,000 people incarcerated in the state of Texas. The TDCJ provides for the welfare and security of these people. It is the purpose of the Chaplain’s office to assist the warden in providing for counseling, life skills education, and family contact for these individuals. The chaplains also provide opportunities for the residents to acquire, nurture, and grow a faith value system to help them cope with life inside and outside the prison.

The system has been under pressure to meet increasing medical and housing expenses by finding ways to reduce spending. One way this is accomplished is to reduce the number of people working as chaplains. The resulting workload has caused many programs and services to be eliminated. These programs were put in place to meet society’s goal of changing the lifestyle of the criminal so they may become productive members of the community.

The short-term solution to funding problems creates a longer-term problem of wasted lives. Trinity RJM endeavors to help close this gap.
